Chat workspace vs support bot
There are two jobs. A chat workspace (LibreChat, Open WebUI) gives a team a branded, multi-model interface instead of a per-seat subscription. A support bot answers customer questions from your help centre, and for that you want a retrieval layer (RAGFlow, AnythingLLM, or a vector store like Qdrant) so answers are grounded and cited.
The self-hosting case
Per-seat chatbot pricing replaces twenty to thirty dollars per user per month with a flat server bill and your own model keys. More importantly, the data stays on your infrastructure, which is the entire reason regulated businesses buy it — and it is why installing these is itself a service you can sell.
Licence care
LibreChat and AnythingLLM are permissive and safe to brand and resell; Open WebUI's branding terms changed between releases, so read the current licence before white-labelling. As always, install on the client's own infrastructure when resale-as-a-service is restricted.
What it costs
A small VPS runs a chat plus vector store for six to twenty-four dollars a month, with zero egress fees on modern edge storage. Model usage is separate and metered. Maintenance is real but small, and it is exactly the work a care plan exists to cover.
How to start
Install one option for one client, connect it to their documents, and time every step. The second install takes half as long; the fifth is configuration. Bundle the care plan — updates, backups and monitoring — and the self-hosted chatbot becomes recurring revenue rather than a project.
