Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): How to Get Cited by AI

In short

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting your brand named and your pages cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini. The moves that work in 2026 are answer-first formatting, evidence (numbers, quotes, sources), consistent entities, and letting AI crawlers read server-rendered HTML.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engines answer a question by searching, reading the pages they find, and writing one reply that cites those pages. GEO is making your pages easy to retrieve, quote and trust so the answer includes you. Research (the GEO paper, KDD 2024) found the strongest methods were adding quotations, statistics and cited sources — up to 40% more visibility — while keyword stuffing actively hurt.

Put the answer first

Answer-first formatting is now table stakes. Surface the core answer in one or two sentences at the very top of the page, then elaborate. Question-shaped H2s, short paragraphs, and a clear summary block make a page extractable, which is exactly what an AI overview needs to quote you. Bury the answer and the engine quotes someone else.

Evidence beats style

The methods that moved visibility in testing all add verifiable substance: a number, a named quote, a cited source. Tone and vocabulary changes helped far less. Put real figures on the pages where buyers decide, name the source of every statistic, and cite where the number comes from — trust is what gets you quoted.

Be technically reachable

None of the major AI crawlers render JavaScript, so content must be in the HTML your server returns. Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot in robots.txt, keep pages indexable and snippet-eligible, and make sure your brand name, services and pricing are stated consistently across every page and profile.

Measure what changed

Track a fixed set of buyer prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and read the Search Console Generative AI report and Bing's AI Performance report. Watch which pages get cited and which sub-questions you win — that tells you what to write next, far better than rankings alone in a zero-click world.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO competes for a position in a list of links and counts clicks; GEO competes to be cited inside an AI-generated answer. Google treats them as one job — its guide says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

Does llms.txt help AI search?

Little to none, by the studies. Google says no special files are required and ignores llms.txt. The things that work are answer-first content, evidence, entity consistency and crawlable HTML.

How long does GEO take?

Early signals usually appear within two to six weeks after a page is recrawled; brands with existing SEO tend to see results faster because retrieval builds on ranking.
